Description

What is “violent” communication?

If the word “violent” means hurtful or hurtful behavior, then most of the ways we communicate are judging others, bullying, racial prejudice, blaming, finger-pointing, discrimination, talking down, criticizing others or ourselves, name-calling, angry reactions, political rhetoric the use, the evaluation of what is good or bad, right or wrong – we could indeed call it violent communication.

What is nonviolent communication?

Nonviolent communication involves four things:

  • Unconsciousness: Principles for Living Compassionately, Collaboratively, Courageously, and Authentically;
  • Language: the perception of how words bring closer or further away;
  • Communication: knowing how to ask for what we want, how to listen to others even if we disagree, and how to work towards solutions that work for everyone;
  • Means of influence: sharing power with others, not using power against others.

Nonviolent communication helps us accomplish three things:

  • Cultivate the ability to live a life where we can make choices, see meaning and feel connected;
  • Build an empathetic connection with yourself and others for more fulfilling relationships;
  • Share resources so everyone can benefit.
